Joel Alberto Garza

Joel Garza is an artist whose creative work and compositions range from orchestral and chamber percussion to theater and poetry/spoken word. He studied under John Lane, all three members of Percussion Group Cincinnati (Allen Otte, Jim Culley, and Rusty Burge), as well as Matt Holm, Adam Groh and Chase Bronstein. 


As a performer, Joel traveled across the country in the Drum Corps International groups Casper Troopers and Seattle Cascades, as well as with the Indoor Drumline (WGI) group Imperial Percussion Theater/Monarch Independent. He composed the published chamber piece "Waves for Allen Otte," from the "Allen Otte Folio," as well as arranged and performed the guitar and narrative works by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Juan Ramón Jimenez, "Platero y yo," for solo percussion and spoken word - "Platero y yo para narrador y (percusionista)." He has worked with and premiered works by composers such as David Farrell, Joseph Pignato, and Monica Pierce, as well as been a part of the CCM Philharmonia Orchestra, CCM Percussion Ensemble, SHSU Symphony Orchestra, and SHSU Percussion Group.


Joel is the founder, former director and member of Sam Houston State University's first ever Latin Band "Grupo Movimiento" (2014-present), as well as the Co-Founder, Co-Director and current member of the Cincinnati/CCM-based Latin Group CinciSon (2016-present), alongside percussionist and friend, Dr. Carlos Camacho.


He has taught as a percussion instructor, marching band tech, as well as a private lessons teacher at several schools including Copperas Cove High School, Magnolia High School, Oak Ridge High School, Vogel Intermediate School, and Bear Branch Junior High School in Texas.


Joel is currently in the last semester of degree work for his Master's in Music in Percussion Performance at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and has received his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX.

Mr. Garza is able to teach all kinds of percussion instruments, ranging from acoustic drum sets to traditional drums.
